Having claimed a Premier League and FA Cup double the previous season, and beating Newcastle 4-0 in the Charity Shield that August, United would have had few reservations heading into this game.
But what ensued was a torturous 90 mins for United. On any given day a top team can suffer a trashing, meted out by one of their challengers and this was just such a day. In truth everything Newcastle did that day simply came off for them, and for United it was to be the start of a very turbulent run of form.
